International Year of the Nurse and Midwife 2020
2020: Year of the Nurse and Midwife
2020 has been named The International Year of the Nurse and Midwife by the World Health Organisation.
This year marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale – the world’s most famous nurse.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), nurses and midwives account for nearly 50 per cent of the global health workforce. WHO estimates the world will need an extra 9 million nurses and midwives by 2030 to reach Sustainable Development Goal 3 (to ensure healthy lives and promote wellbeing for all at all ages).
Nurses and midwives play a vital role in providing health services. These are the people who devote their lives to caring for mothers and children; giving lifesaving immunizations and health advice; looking after older people and generally meeting everyday essential health needs.
At Jessie McPherson Private Hospital we are celebrating the significant contribution nurses and midwives make to our patients and their families.
Throughout 2020 we will profile members of our nursing team and take a closer look at the vital roles they play in providing health services here at Jessie McPherson Private.
